The Chincoteague ponies are the official state pony of Virginia as of 2023.  We have been visiting Chincoteague for over 50 years and think they could have been so designated years ago.  The photos in this gallery depict several activities.  The Saltwater Cowboys round up the ponies, with the northern herd being driven down the beach and to their corral for vet checks.  The annual pony swim is in July and we have been in the boats helping form the channel for the swim.  At the Fairgrounds, some younger ponies are auctioned to help manage the size of the herd.  Later the ponies swim back to Assateague Island, find their group, and head off to their own parts of the island.  Other roundups during the year allow for more vet checks.
